i get very puzzled when people ask for an Arrandale Core I3 ULV when that's slower than the C2D ULVs that we have. People are apparently falling for all the marketing.

After cutting my cable TV 3 months ago I've been using Netflix and haven't looked back! I considered getting Hulu Plus, but didn't see the value in it. I barely even watch Hulu free anymore (all my free episodes are expiring to Plus now). Occasionally I can't find anything "good" to watch, but it's great for watching older TV shows in HD. Been burning through Arrested Development :D

So much whining, so little time.

About the only reason I'd care about anyone getting a discount is if I couldn't get the same discount myself.

Apple can charge what makes sense to them. As long as it's a decent business decision on their side, I have no gripe. If demand is high enough, they can get what they ask. If their institutional customers want to be "tossed a bone" to buy, then throw them a bone and make it up on volume.

Make some money Apple - and don't go broke in the process.

I like what Apple does enough to want Apple to stay healthy.

Nobody has to buy anything Apple sells if they don't want to. Nor can Apple make them.

    Move on, people.

Are they given a formal training by apple? Even if they are, every approvers view will be slightly different.....perhaps this app was one that should have been approved from the start but was rejected by an approver who likes to abuse power?

You are correct!!! 10 will always be 2. 01 will always be 1. Endianness swaps the bytes, not the bits. Binary addition would be hell if the bits were swapped... Plus then writing bit-operators and using bit-masks in C would just be a pain in the arse when it came time to compile that game for 5 different platforms.
The bits ARE "swapped", but the whole processor is "swapped" so nobody notices- until you start looking at multibyte values.

As I tried to alude to in the article, RFID is incredibly prevalent, though it also encompasses a lot of different technologies.

For instance, Active UHF RFID (Ultra High Frequency... around 900 MHz) RFID is used in toll-paying systems like EZ-Pass in the U.S. Since these tags have batteries to drive them, they have a limited lifespan, however they can be read reliably at high speeds (30 mph+) at 30 ft.

Passive UHF RFID, also known as "EPC Gen2" or ISO 18000-6c is used in a ton of applications: Walmart's supply chain, enhanced drivers licenses and some other travel documents (excluding passport booklets). These kind of tags, depending on the antenna and environment, can be read in typical conditions from 15 - 30 ft away, but speeds above 15-20 mph is problematic for getting reliable reads. I worked most with these cards in my last job under contract with the US Government.

Passive HF RFID (High Frequency... around 12 MHz) RFID is used in credit cards, mass transit ID cards, and many access control badges. They have a very limited reliable read range of only a few centimeters. I've been working more and more with these recently in my current job with a security company.

The "Near Field Communication" (NFC) that the article talks about is talking about a version of HF RFID that is both passive and active.

You should check out Air Video (the iOS app). It's the best solution I've found and with iOS 4.3 it works great for streaming all the .avi and .mkv movies on my HD to my apple TV via my iPhone.

It goes (Air Video server on computer) -> iOS device -> Apple TV.

It was probably the best $2.99 I've ever spent.

Yep, this is an awesome app. You have to manually download the BETA version of Air Video Server for it to do Video Airplay though. The regular release does not support it.

Just something I _think_ I remember reading, but didn't Apple change the firewire controller chip on some MacBook Pro's back around the time yours was made?

.... and the result was that some firewire devices were no longer recognized?

    Suggestion:
If you can't find the solution on macrumors, also check:
macintouch.com (use search function to check old reader reports)
    macfixit.com

I also think that some folks were able to "work around" this problem by using a firewire hub, but again, I can't confirm that.

    Just some thoughts....

By the way...Steve Jobs has a rare form of Pancreatic Cancer, called Islet cell carcinoma. The 10 year survival rate is 32%. That is very good, especially with all the money and drive that Steve has. He looks like he is a man on chemo, not a man who is going to die. I say he lives till his 80's.

LOL, yea because one of those large chunks of black plastic is soooo much better looking than the other two. None of the current consoles are "good" looking, if we're being totally honest. They are just boxes, that perform a function. Who cares?

Tell that to Steve and see what happens, lol.

I do like the way my Wii looks on the shelf. Its slick, plain, and small. The console itself just looks classy, especially the black wiis. The wiimotes on the other hand.... I keep those in a drawer so they dont stick out like ugly white remotes.

Trying Japanese (Shift JIS) this time

    ǂ߂́H

sorry about this, but I've had trouble with Japanese text only getting thru intact to a portion of friends to whom I write. Haven't been able to come up with a determination of what the issue is (e.g., Yahoo, 10.4.x, Hotmail). And it's late and I'm avoiding doing work.

Again, sorry for the massively off-topic stuff here...I thank you for your patience (if you actually are patient about it).

All I use it for is Syncing between multiple Macs - which is handy but hardly a justification for the $99 price of admission.

That ALONE makes it worth $99 per year. Then I get IMAP email...then I get iDisk...and everything else. There is room for improvement, but I love the .Mac service.

Alright, perhaps the second time I was going there just to see what I could see, I'll admit that. The other time however was my friend's first time to that mall (yes runninmac) since the Apple Store opened, and he did want to look at iPods, which took him a whole 5 minutes.

I see what you all are saying, but it makes me sound like some sort of predator or something. I haven't gone in drooling and grunting all while starring at her. It takes two to make eye-contact you know, and it wasn't a creepy sort of thing, just a passing glance from a decent ways away. I didn't see her and suddenly start moving her way or anything, it was just a look. The story was outlined as such solely because I was bored, so I put a little more thought into the story than perhaps I should have....I am not obsessed with her, and if she is reading this then she can read that....I would easily pass her by I just thought she was cute and it caught me off guard that she would say hi to me outside of her paid-to-talk place of employment.

Anyway, I only go there when I go to the mall, and only because it is the easiest store to relax in for a short while if I need a break from actual shopping, because there is a ton of eye-candy (computer wise) that I can wish for and play with. I will take your advices and not try to make eye-contact with her on subsequent visits, but I have to say that sounds pretty high-schoolish that I can't even look at a girl I happen think is attractive, but whatever if you all seem to think it could really be creeping her out.

Hats off to everyone for keeping this up and running.

    Dale

Actually Dale - hats off to you for resurrecting the challenge. While I enjoy many of the threads in MR, this is by far the one of greatest interest to me. Taking on a challenge and working to achieve it in an image; getting specific feedback from others ... these are invaluable. Thanks much.

Now to figure out "beauty in unexpected places". this one is, for me, a much harder concept. At least, to do so without being cliche.

There it is folks. The American consumer is at fault for the problems of the US auto industry.

In a roundabout way, perhaps. The companies are almost exclusively at fault for letting the unions take them over and reduce their ability to produce competitive vehicles at competitive prices. Certain consumers are to somewhat to blame for basically falling for it... for not paying attention to build quality, value, and instead simply purchasing something because it was 'made in America.'

    Jake:

Please don't assume. First of all, I pay for 4 active ADC memberships. I usually buy about 4 WWDC tickets. This year as every year, I bought my own WWDC ticket. My employer (myself) is mean ;-) However this year for the first time in 5 years I wasn't able to attend because of knee surgery recovery running longer than expected. I planned my surgery around WWDC.

So let me get this right? You are saying that the sessions shouldn't be online because you are poor and don't want people who get their wwdc tickets for free to get the jump on you.

SO WHAT about all the PEOPLE POORER than you who can't afford WWDC? So you are saying they don't deserve a chance to learn leopard?

What you are saying is a double standard!

Regardless, my issue isn't money, and the WWDC sessions are always put up online, which they will be shortly. It would just be nice if Apple got on the ball.

I realize you don't want the session videos online because the college student who has $498, and overdraws his bank account to get ADC select, might get the jump on you, and since you EVEN though you paid it out of pocket were able to afford $2300, you are using this to say that more money should buy more?, but not really?

Think about what your saying.. claiming to be poor, but it only works as long as you aren't the one cut off.

either way I can afford any Mac, or Apple product I want, and development is a passion for me not a requirement to survive. I don't need to work, I want to work. But saying that your not going to be able to compete with somebody like me with unlimited funds... isn't true. Mac OS X is the best platform to develop for if you want to level the playing field. You notice many of the Apple Design Awards went to SMALL companies? On the mac platform, many, many small companies, and one man shows are making very good money! You have just as much chance as me, even if I have more resources money, machines, and people. It's easy to innovate.

This is the first year that I went to WWDC and I am a ADC Select developer like you. However, the difference is I had to pay 100% out of pocket to go. My employer does not use Macs and I had to do it on my own.* At the conference, I met a lot of developers whose companies paid for the trip and they stayed in the Hyatts ($200 a night).. My gf and I stayed at the crappy hotel by 7th street which was in a unsafe part of SOMA plus I used a week of my own PTO etc..*

It sure was alot of money ~$2300.* I sure could have done alot with that but I used it for my education and check out WWDC.* It really adds alot of value to the conference to really get the new bits. * I do not think it is fair to wait for the general rollout to ADC if you are charging so much for the conference. *This year, there was not a lot of new things besides Leopard.. Leopard was the star show and only partially revealed. Therefore the revealed parts and Leopard sessions were the key points and those were pretty tight lipped and the mostly the value of going.

So,* why should you be able to see the sessions and get the same seed three weeks later? *Its not fair to independent developers like me and gives my project a jump start against potential competetors like you..* **

I skipped last two years WWDC and waited until Tiger was ADC seeded and have been watching the 2005 sessions without going to WWDC the same as you..* So, i have been on both sides of the fence.* Once you pay for WWDC yourself, then you really understand that its right to let the WWDC get the first drink from the water fountain and drink for awhile.

    -JakeDude*

Phones keep time while they're off. Phone's also don't check to see what time it is, every hour, they check when they're turned on. The network provides a fallback, but the phone should know what time it is, too. There's no excuse for Apple's spotty coding. None.

Agreed. My macbook air correctly adjusted to the right time without needing an internet connection, so I don't see why my phone should rely on the carrier.
